Job Description:
Job DescriptionThe Area Agency on Aging is searching for a
Benefits Specialist to provide specialized information, referral
and assistance to older adults, people with disabilities, and their
family caregivers. Benefits specialists help callers access
long-term services and supports such as home health, attendant
services, transportation, medical supplies, and home repairs. In
addition, they provide information regarding affordable housing
options, authorize respite care, and counsel nursing home residents
about community-based services that support return to independent
living.The ideal candidate has working knowledge of federal, state,
and local health and social service programs through entities
including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Veterans
Administration, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Area
Agencies on Aging, and Centers for Independent Living.Primary
responsibilities include responding to requests for resource
information, researching potential resources, organizing resource
information, and assisting callers in applying for public
benefits.Required SkillsEssential skills include:Excellent oral
communication skills, including ability to engage in active
listening and explain complicated programs in simple termsAbility
to efficiently gather and organize resource information to allow
for quick retrievalAbility to elicit callers' wants, needs, and
preferences and identify root causesPatience in working with
callers who may have difficulty communicatingAbility to manage
variable work loadsRequired ExperienceAt least two years'
experience with information and referral and/or case management is
required.Experience working with older adults, persons with
disabilities, and/or family caregivers is preferred.Bachelor's
degree requiredBilingual candidates are encouraged to
apply.Starting Salary:The starting salary is $38,157 or higher,
